We just came home from a trip to A&E (that's the Accident & Emergency Department of Tallaght Hospital). Kate caught her thumb in the hinge side of the door leading to the garden, the door completely closed on her and there is not padding or cushioning. Both paradigmslost and I jumped into immediate overdrive mode and applied ice and painkillers which was apparently exactly the right thing to do. We called our insurance companie's nurse line and they advised us to take her in to make sure there was no crushing injury or chiped bone. My Mom (who is the Rock of Gibraltar) drove us the 45 minutes to the nearest A&E Department and surprisingly about 3 1/2 hours after the accident we were back home. Thankfully there were no chips or hairline fractures and the girl is now sleeping peacefully surrounded by her friends. Not the way I would have chosen to spend the evening but everyone is ok.
