We had a lovely weekend, I took Friday off to spend with Kate as she was off school on mid-term break. We had a slow leisurely morning and then went to Clane to the new playground there. It's quite fabulous with some really well thought out equipment. She made a new friend and was very happy. After that we went to the Orchard for lunch and browsing plants. The Orchard is a local nursery which has a fabulous cafe. Of course we could not come home without some goodies so we got some Snakeshead Fritillary ( http://thecotswoldgateway.co.uk/north-meadow.htm ) and Lilly of the Valley Plants which will go in the orchard. We also picked up the seeds we were still missing for the veggie garden and a couple of small packs of seed potatoes. Kate scored with a lovely and soft badger which was on sale for €5. We often go to the Orchard for lunch when I'm home during the week it's a great place for kids, they can run and play on the grounds without any fear of traffic and Mom and I enjoy browsing the plants.

Saturday is our Farmer's Market Day, B had to go to Chiro at 12:30 so Mom, the Kate and I set off early so we could be back in time for him to take the car. Over here the market doesn't open till 10:30. We picked up our food shopping and also found some dogwood plants (10 for €15) for our border. Over here we get a different kind of dogwood than MO, it's a shrub usually under 1.5m which is pruned regularly as it is grown for its winter display of bright red branches. After we got home B took off and Mom and I went into the garden for some work. We did about 2 hours of pretty hard labour which is as much as our decrepit bodies will stand for at any one time. We moved all the potted roses and tulips to the front of the house as they will be planted at the edge of the driveway. Mom showed me how to prune the roses, it seems all of them have survived their yearlong banishment into pots but they will be much happier once we get them into the ground. Unfortunately it's not looking great for that happening very soon as we have a forecast for rain in the rest of the week and the ground is still sopping. I managed to heel in the dogwood plants which will keep them for the foreseeable future even if we cannot plant for another month. The vegetable garden area is the wettest part of the garden, there is no chance that we will get the beds put in for at least another couple of weeks. We did pick up a few rhubarb crowns which will have to be planted come hell or high water (it's probably going to be the high water)in the next week, its a good thing they like their feet wet.

On Sunday we had an enforced day of rest as it snowed overnight. I did some cooking but that was the extent of my ambitions yesterday. I made the meat part of the shepherds pie that is going to be dinner today. I also made the most delicious apple/blueberry crumble (I'll post the recipe separately cause it was so easy and really tasty) and we had pizza for dinner. I made a blanca pizza with some leftover salmon which was yummy, enough for leftovers for lunch today. Kate and [livejournal.com profile] paradigmslost went off on an adventure to Dublin to see the "Dead Zoo" which is an exhibition of stuffed and otherwise deceased animals. They had a blast.

This is getting a bit excessive so I will leave it at that. It was a good weekend.

1 cup flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 package of ground almonds (about 100g I think)
1tsp Cinnamon
about 110g unsalted butter
Apples
Blueberries

Melt the butter, mix everything together.

Slice enough apples into whatever container you are making the crumble in to fill it about 2/3rds full. Add a couple of handfulls of frozen blueberries, sprinkle with a bit of sugar, top with the crumble mixture. Bake in a moderate over for 30-45 minutes or until golden brown witch juices bubbling up. We had it at room temperature just on its own, it was very tasty. You could serve it piping hot with vanilla icecream or with a warm custard.
