We all had a fabulous weekend spent in Tuamgraney Woods on the shore of Lough Derg. Mom took a woodcarving class and of course excelled (as she does at everything) she produced this beautifully liquid plaque that will be installed somewhere in the garden. Her teacher Ricardo was amazing with the Kate and she is now the proud owner of her very own magical staff carved with a flower, a butterfly and a dragonfly. It's lovely how something so simple can make a little kid so very happy. [livejournal.com profile] paradigmslost showed an amazing aptitude for blacksmithing and made a gorgeous toasting fork with curlicues and everything. I was registered for a copper smithing course and sort of had to drop in and out of it because of the Kate (who generally was a mud covered angel). The instructor was very patient and and excellent teacher though and he had a mostly finished piece that I was able to complete (it's a tea caddy) so I came home with something too. I could actually really get into this copper work it was a lot of fun and the stuff you make is really really useful. Another big plus was that we were in an idylic location surrounded by deciduous woodland and millions of bluebells, the entire place was absolutely covered in them. It rained the first morning a bit and so the paths were a tad muddy but after that the weather held up well. Options for further weekends in the woods are: Silversmithing, Stonecarving, Basketweaving, Sugan Chair making. The Herbalism and Fiber courses are a bit 101 for my taste so I don't think I will be taking them though I might just bring my spinning wheel next time and not book a class so someone is available for Kate when she needs it. She happily plays away with the other kids but needs someone every so often and you can't really do a class when you need to be away every 20 minutes or so. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast so we had a dry and warm place to sleep and a good solid breakfast in our bellies to start the day. If anyone plans to come to Ireland they could do worse than making one of the Weekends in the Woods part of the trip. Here's the website: http://www.celtnet.org/

For those interested in sca garb check this out, I think it could be made to work perfectly well for any body type and it looks very cool (in both senses of the word). It's from Greet's Middle Ages blog.
