Pandemics

Here's the deal, I don't think things are going to go back to "normal", not ever. We may not be in high alert lockdown forever but this pandemic is going to be around for years, the fastest a vaccine has ever been developed was for Ebola and that took five years. We can hope that in this case, the process will be faster because let's be real, Ebola was killing black people over there and the West is throwing a lot of resources at this particular pandemic because it's close to home.

So maybe we get lucky and it takes only two years. That's a long time not to make fundamental changes, that make complete sense to begin with because we are hoping to go back to "normal" soon. The most likely scenario is that it will take a few years to develop a reliable vaccine. In the meantime, we need to put in institutionalized processes to protect the population. We need to make working from home the norm for those who can. We need to get used to using facemasks as a lot of Asia already does as a matter of course. We need to figure out how to deliver education in a mix of on-site and remote ways. We need to get used to not travelling like we used to, Hell, we all know we shouldn't be flying here there and everywhere, and yet we still do. That needs to stop, air trips need to be the exception rather than the rule.

These are all things that will benefit us going forward, goodness knows our education is mainly used to warehouse kids and turn them into worker bees for industry, it could be so much more, it could work so much better. Spending hours on end on roads that are backed up to Kingdom come is bad for us, bad for the environment, no Bueno all round. This needs to change, this is our opportunity to change, fundamentally.

In the meantime it's gonna suck because gatherings need to be restricted to the local level, be outdoors if possible. There are ways to get together safely especially if the figures are low. But we can't keep lurching from one spike to the next because we are chasing symptomatic infection rates. Gods protect us all during the flu season which will follow on foot of a population that's tired of restrictions and is breaking them.

It's a trip post again. I am planning on an SR Harris shopping run possibly Sunday the 22nd of June at 1pm. Anyone interested, would a different time suit better?

I'm currently looking at Hotels in the Mpls area and am only coming up with stuff in and around the Mall which are not inspiring me. Does anyone have any suggestions, or perhaps have enough room and the patience to put up with two adults and a kid for several days. In know this would be a huge imposition so please don't feel obliged. We will be in Mpls for a few days after we arrive on the 20th of June and for about a week before we leave on the 11th of July.

Lots of stuff has been happening in the last few weeks. We are making progress to securing planning permission for our house. The new job is if nothing else a change from the old and has been very quiet due to everyone but me being out on vacation. Unfortunately the household has been unable to eradicate what I'm starting to call the Sick. Last weekend both I and my Mother were pretty ill with the flue, she was bedridden for three days. We are still feeling pretty ucky but life goes on. Poor Kate continues to be congested and [livejournal.com profile] paradigmslost has a nasty cough that won't go away. I'm getting to see a specialist in the next month or so, it's taken a year for the system to get to me but they are now sending me to a private clinic as I have been waiting for so long. Perhaps they will have some good suggestion on how to keep these sinus infections that have been plaguing me for the last couple of years at bay. We are also taking Kate in again tomorrow if they don't have anything more proactive to say than "she has a cold, take actifed" we are going to ask for a referral to a pediatric specialist.

I managed to finally finish the red sock, this weekend I need to get in gear and cast on the second sock as one single one doesn't do me much good :-) We are also planning to paint eggs and put up Spring trimmings around the house. Monday was nice and low key Kate and her Papa went to the local small parade and I made the now customary corned beef and cabbage, it was quite yummy.

Plans for our US trip are continuing, it's up to [livejournal.com profile] paradigmslost to give me a schedule for the interviews he wants to do so we can set up an itinerary. I'm not looking forward to the flight but I can't wait to see everyone.

I'm back

Got back yesterday and slept like the dead last night, no sleep for three nights will do that. I had a lovely couple of days punctuated by knitting socks watching the world go by in cafes and strolling through the streets of Louvain shopping.

The weather was gorgeous and the living was civilized :-)

Somehow, someone really wanted me at Family Gathering. I will be traveling to the States on Business the week of FG and have wrangled a couple of vacation days out of my boss. My itinerary is as follows:

Date AL/AA/NW
16-Sep-06 DUB 10:30am JFK 13:00pm
18-Sep-06 JFK 7:51am BOS 8:55am
20-Sep-06 BOS 7:40am MSP 10:09am
24-Sep-06 MSP 15:20pm ORD 16:45pm
24-Sep-06 ORD 19:00pm DUB 8:30am

This means I would be arriving on Wednesday at 10:09am at MSP, most probably I will not have anything other than business clothes a laptop and a pair of jeans and my toothbrush on me. I will also be in New York and footloose on the evenings of the 16th and 17th of September and in Boston most of the day on the 18th of September and the evening of the 19th of September. So if anyone on route wants to hang out, let me know.
